Thy own accord? Was it necessary that God as God, the eternal, free, independent God must thus make Himself such a sacrificial victim for the sake of His poor creatures? Are not all hearts in Thy hand? And Thou guidest them like streams of water? Couldst Thou not have led them thither, without this divine victim, where Thou hast willed them to go? I am answered, a thousand times for one! But are all these answers of God, so fated by Thee, eternal God? [...]

If it has seemed good in Thy sight, eternal, incomprehensible, wondrous Love, do I then need to understand, to make use of my reason? Would I thus be happier in this world, if I were to give a hearing to these tumultuous upwelling thoughts? Would I gain any great advantage, if I denied the whole volume, and held Thee as God's child in the crib at Bethlehem for a fairy-tale? Would I be happier, if I were to laugh to scorn all learning and divine law? Yes, then I could follow all my impulses. But would I really be any the happier for it? (...)".
